If you are using the brand new MSN Messenger or Live Messenger I should say then you have several options to you in regards to your mobile phone.
First Way:
Your phone comes with Messenger on it and you put your username and password into it and message that way. This is free on the MSN side but chances are you will incure data usage for using the internet on your phone. If you get a data plan covering you for unlimited data usage then this would be free to you. You will also be charged a multimedia/pic message rate by your cell phone carrier. This is to say if you have 200 messages a month and you send 201 you will be charged for the 1 message on your carriers bill. If you have unlimited text messages it is free to do it this way.
Second Way:
With the new Live/MSN Messenger you can set it so when you are logged out and someone on Messenger sends you a message it sends you a text message. This uses not internet data so you arent charge for the kb used. It is also free on the MSN side. The only thing that applies are your standard text message rates with your carrier, just like the above senario.
How to set this up. Download the new Messenger. Then at the top after you sign in click on Tools and click on options. Then on the little window that pops up click on the left hand side Phone. Click to button in the top left that says Mobile Settings. There under Mobile Settings will be easy to follow instructions of how to set it up from there. When it is all set up you should be able to close the window it popped up in. You can go back to your window with the Mobile Settings button. Below that should be a box for you to click and check that says to allow your contact list to send you messages. Click Apply and OK at the bottom of the window in that order and you are all set.
So when you are offline and someone sends you a message you will get it as a text message. Just reply to it and it sends the message back to the persons messenger. It is a fantastic thing.
Sorry no screen shots of this but my computer wasnt cooperating with me putting them in.
