How Twitter Works

I have had a few people ask me about what twitter is and how it works. So here is a way to tell you all that is easy to understand. Think of it as a giant electronic message board. You can write a message of what you are doing anytime you want. You can also reply to others messages anytime.

Twitter does what I call word matching. Basically it matches words with other peoples posts and will display them for you if you do a search or under Trending Topics. You can see both the search and the Trending Topics on the right hand side after you log in. Trending Topics are usually things that are popular, like tech stuff, news reports, politics or star/entertainment stuff.

For example there is a lot of buzz about sales with AT&T so it is a trending topic. The sheer number of types AT&T is put into a message is what makes it a trending topic. So anyone who puts that in their message will also have their message display for anyone who clicks on AT&T under trending topics or searches for AT&T.

What this means for you? Well basically it means a way to advertise if you have a business or service you offer and it can allow you to reach hundreds, thousands or millions. For example if you are a relator you just put whatever you want in your message and add cities in the area words like mortgage, interest rates then your message will show up there. If you have a website be sure to always include it so people will visit your website as well.

The idea is to regularly type a message (a tweet) things so people gain interest in what you write and they will follow you. They may end up as a lead for you in your business.

Thanks Man Child
This is really good and you helped me "get it" today. I have had some e-mails from folks who got my twitter I mean my tweets. How funny! Thanks for the explanation. I received (a couple weeks ago) a questionaire from ERA National asking if we wanted to be "up" on twitter as it is now beginning to be used in Real Estate. So for South East Idaho I'm on the edge of knowledge now thanks to you! Ha ha No one knows what it is here!
