Photos from My Phone

First statue to be commissioned of President Washington was worked on by a man who moved to, lived in and sculpted in Italy. It was two pieces, statue and pedestal, 12 tons each. It was more or less sinking ships so a navy ship come to get it and bring it back. Once in the capitol building it was unveiled to the public. The wealthy/cultural people understood that this was George Washington, depicted just like a Zeus sculpture, god like, handing over his role as General and taking the lead as president while he remembers God will help him. The regular people never saw Washington this way. Always in uniform or in clothes of the day. Never like that. So it was moved out of the Capitol, onto the Capital Lawn and eventually was put into the Smithsonian American History building. via Instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BpLYpwzFgYEGsZa5LdYp-Tl__hBIixVP5P1PDE0/
