Books, Library, Learning

I have been quite concerned lately about what my kids have been learning. We arent able to afford a preschool and my daughter cant count to ten without missing one number or other. She also doesnt know the whole alphabet so im worried she wouldnt be ready for school in August. So we went to the library a week or so ago and i found a whole section that has some excellent picture books for counting, numbers, and letters! I am so glad that these authors and the Edenvale Branch of the library here has made it SO easy to get.

After 2 weeks with about 10 books she is learning so much and my son who is only 2 can point to a capital A already. Im so excited and so happy! They are pretty good books and both the kids love them, love reading and love going to the library. That in itself is something that I love!

My recommendations is get books with pictures that are imaginative and your kids can understand. I also recommend getting books that match the length of the attention span of your kid. Mine seems to like shorter books and reading more. I know some kids like books that can be longer and reading only a few. Other than that I recommend letting them interact with the book touch the pictures, trace the letters or numbers. Thats what we are having success with currently.

that's a great idea... plus i'm getting downright sick of singing the abc's 24/7... and i'm sure Ava's getting sick of it too!

Good for you Blake! You're the kind of parent teacher's love to see. The ones that get involved in their children's learning. Don't feel bad that you're not sending her to preschool. I currently don't have any plans of sending my boys to one.
Some fun things your kids might like that will help them learn abc's and 123's...
Sand/dirt- let them make the letters or numbers with a matching picture by drawing in it.
playdough- make the letters/numbers out of playdough with matching sculptures.
Glue- Take index cards and you (not the kids, unless you're up for a real mess) write the letters/numbers with white school glue. when it dries it will be textured flash cards. The kids can feel and trace the letters with their fingers. You can use a green marker and put a dot where their strokes should start and a red dot where they should end and pick up their finger.
Sand paper- cut the letters/numbers out of sand paper and let them touch and feel those.
Paint- have them write and paint pictures with finger paint (or pudding for an edible treat.)
Hope you can use the ideas have some fun with your kiddos. Good luck!
